From Setback to Strength: A Leadership Coach's Guide to Resilient Growth
Nov 28, 2024
There's something magical about early morning reflection time. Today, as I sit with my steaming cup of coffee watching the rain outside, I'm struck by how perfectly life delivers its lessons, even when they aren't the lessons we thought we needed.
An unexpected turn
I'll never forget that early summer morning when everything changed. After years of leading transformations in the corporate world, I suddenly found myself at an unexpected crossroads. Life has a way of shaking up our carefully laid plans, doesn't it? I had spreadsheets, timelines, and meticulously crafted strategies and goals. I even had different colored sticky notes on my wall mapping out how perfectly it would all align (fellow visual planners, you know exactly what I'm talking about!).
But life had other plans.
When one door closes
Sometimes the universe forces us to pause when we least expect it or want it. What started out as a shock quickly transformed into something else entirely: an opportunity. An opportunity to really examine what I wanted to create, who I wanted to serve, and how I could make the biggest impact.
You know those moments when you're sitting in your car, taking deep breaths and wondering if you're on the right path? I had plenty of those this year. But each time, I came back to one core truth: your mindset shapes your reality.
The power of perspective
What I discovered through this journey and something I now share with every leader I work with - is that what feels like an ending is often life's way of creating space for something even better.
That unexpected pause? It gave me time to really understand what emerging leaders in today's corporate environment need most. That shift in direction? It introduced me to incredible people who saw potential in my vision that I hadn't even recognized. That push out of my comfort zone? It led me to develop more innovative approaches to change leadership development.
Why this matters for leaders
As I work with new managers and emerging leaders, I notice a common thread - we're all so focused on the next goal, the next milestone, that we rarely pause to acknowledge how far we've come. We celebrate our teams' wins (as we should!) but brush past our own growth moments.
But here's what I've learned: Your journey as a leader isn't just about reaching destinations, but it's about who you become along the way that matters. Those moments when you have to pivot quickly? They're building your resilience muscle. Those times when you need to completely rethink your approach? They're developing your adaptability.
A different kind of gratitude
This Thanksgiving, my gratitude runs deeper than ever. I'm thankful for:
- The local coffee shop that became my second office into the late evenings (and the baristas who became unofficial cheerleaders)
- Every leader who trusted me with their growth journey, especially when they were facing their own moments of uncertainty
- The mentors who showed up with exactly the wisdom I needed, exactly when I needed it
- And yes, even those challenging moments that pushed me to grow in ways I never expected
Your turn to reflect
As you move through this holiday season, I invite you to pause and reflect. Where did this year surprise you? What challenge became an unexpected teacher? What growth are you not giving yourself credit for?
Because sometimes the most significant breakthroughs come from our biggest challenges. And sometimes the best thing we can do as leaders is to honor our own journey and all the messy parts that come with it. It's about maintaining that growth mindset, finding opportunities in the uncertainty, and building the resilience to navigate whatever comes our way.
