how to stay calm in the midst of chaos and manage stress

For many of us when we find ourselves in a fast-paced, chaotic environment or situation we suddenly feel overwhelmed and frazzled. These situations can be especially challenging for introverts who lean away from situations that drain all their energy. As someone who not only has been in the center of these chaotic environments for most of my career but is also an introvert, trust me, I get it.

I've been in the center of the high-stress, fast-paced corporate world for years and I've definitely had my fair share of "chaos overload" moments. But over time, I've figured out how to be the calm in the storm and I've discovered a few simple yet powerful strategies along the way that help me maintain my sanity and stay centered even when the world around me is spinning.

Here are some of the steps that I personally practice when things get crazy:

  1. Take a moment to step away: When the noise becomes too much to even think straight, step away. Find a quiet corner, go outside or find a vacant meeting room. Even if you just stand up and change your body position you can disconnect and take a few minutes to regroup.

  2. Practice taking four deep breaths in and out. Inhale deeply, filling your lungs with air, and exhale slowly, releasing tension with each breath. It's amazing how a few mindful breaths can shift your entire state of being. True story that every single time I do this by the end of my 4th breath I can't help but yawn because it always puts me into a more relaxed state than I was before.

  3. Become the observer: Instead of getting swept up in the chaos, take a step back and observe it with curiosity like you were watching a movie. Notice the details, the movements, the energy, the players. This shift in perspective can create a sense of detachment and help you regain control and not feel so swept up in the moment.

  4. Unleash your creativity: Grab a pen, a paintbrush, or your computer. Let your creativity flow and express the emotions you're feeling whether it's in a journal, a doodle, coloring a picture or creating a song... any creative outlet is a great way to channel stress and release pent up emotions.

  5. Change your vibe by emerging yourself in sound: Put on your noise-canceling headphones and immerse yourself in any sounds that you find soothing. Whether it's classical, nature sounds, electronic or just beats that make you feel calm and happy...music can change your whole demeanor.

The key here is to remember that you don't have to be swept away by the chaos around you. By taking active steps to incorporate simple practices into your daily routine, you can create moments of calm amidst the storm and thrive in a fast-paced world.
